“CHARLIE CHAPLIN”

Charlot manages to escape from Sing Sing, and swimming lands on the beach below the pier where the beauty, her suitor and her mother hold conversation. Inadvertently the mother ends up falling into the water; the girl despairs, her boyfriend cowardly does not throw himself despite her invitations who then decides to dive into the rescue of the parent. She would risk drowning if Charlot didn't come to her rescue. He will be the one to recover the mother, the girl and her corpulent boyfriend, who stuns him to repay him. Unconscious, Charlot ends up carried by the waves on the beach where he is rescued by the girl's chauffeur and transported to the residence of her noble family. Charlot adapts perfectly to the tenor of the noble house and elegantly wanders among the occupants and their guests to whom the girl presents him as the hero who saved her, arousing the jealousy of her boyfriend. The nobility, as we know, loves dancing and pleasant conversation and our hero excels in both activities, encountering some difficulties only in consuming an ice cream which ends up in a lady's dress, arousing the indignation and reaction of her husband who would like to punch him instantly. Charlot's attitude arouses more and more suspicions, until her real identity is revealed with the consequent manhunt to hunt down the now unmasked escapee, to the girl’s disappointment and the consternation of her family. But the task of catching him will be anything but easy...

The song and sweet voice of a girl seduce the tramp by inducing him to enter the mission and partecipate himself in the function in progress, at the end of which the conversation held between the girl and the pastor convert the tramp to righteousness and taking farewell, and spontaneously returns the previously grabbed collecting box. The neighborhood is degraded, its inhabitants are poor, violent and do-nothing, or rather, busy beating up the unfortunate agents of the local police station, and among all the cruel, a gigantic and overbearing bully who terrorizes the whole street in front of the mission stands out for his malice. Jobs are scarce, except as a policeman, advertised and offered outside the local police station and which will eventually tempt the tramp as well. After two or three failed attempts, forcing his own anarchic nature, he decides to enter the station to leave it shortly after wearing a flaming policeman’s uniform two sizes larger, but qualified to defend and enforce the law and sent on a mission right in the street where the bad guy lords it. Charlot will regret his carreer as soon as he finds himself face to face with the bully, intolerant of authority and who immediately shows him his bad intentions by immobilizing him against a gas lamp which he is bending with herculean force around Charlot’s neck, but he quickly escapes his grip by sticking his head into the lamp post and opening the gas valve making him lose consciousness. Having the incredulous colleagues intervene to immobilize and transport the scoundrel to jail, Charlot runs into the mission girl, who volunteered to look after the disadvantaged families of the street, accompanying and assisting her in the visits. Meanwhile the villain recovers and defeated the entire team of policemen returns to his home where he undertakes a furious quarrel with his unfortunate drawing the attention of Charlot who rushes to the rescue, ignoring the generality of the protagonist, discovering it only when he will rush against him to take revenge for the affront he has suffered. In the meantime, the girl remained alone and watched by a gang of thugs who, once kidnapped, segregates her in a basement in the company of a drug addict who will not fail to show her unwanted attention. Escaping the clutches of his rival, Charlot, he ends up running into the same band of thugs succumbing to the superiority of numbers, and thrown in the same place of segregation as the girl ends up sitting right on the syringe that the drug addict was preparing with a dose of narcotic; the effect of the injection is immediate and infuses Charlot with an irrepressible vitality charge tank to which he routs all those he meets on his way, freeing himself, the girl and the neighborhood from bullying and harassment…

Charlot riesce ad evadere da Sing Sing, ed a nuoto approda sulla spiaggia sottostante il molo dove la bella, il suo spasimante e la madre di lei si intrattengono in conversazione. Inavvertitamente la madre finisce per cadere in acqua; la ragazza si dispera, il suo fidanzato codardamente non si butta nonostante gli inviti di lei che allora decide di tuffarsi in soccorso della genitrice. Rischierebbe l'affogamento se non intervenisse in suo soccorso Charlot. Sarà lui a recuperare la madre, la ragazza e il corpulento fidanzato di lei, che per ripagarlo lo stordisce. Privo di sensi Charlot finisce trasportato dalle onde sulla spiaggia dove viene soccorso dallo chauffeur della ragazza e trasportato nella residenza della nobile famiglia di lei. Charlot si adatta perfettamente al tenore della nobile casa e si aggira elegante tra gli occupanti ed i loro invitati ai quali la ragazza lo presenta come l'eroe che la salvata, suscitando la gelosia del suo fidanzato. La nobiltà, si sa, ama il ballo e la piacevole conversazione ed il nostro eroe eccelle in entrambe le attività, incontrando qualche difficolta solo nella consumazione di un gelato che finisce nel vestito di una signora, suscitando lo sdegno e la reazione del marito che lo vorrebbe picchiare all'istante. L'atteggiamento di Charlot desta sempre più sospetti, finche la sua reale identità viene svelata con la conseguente caccia all'uomo per braccare l'evaso ormai smascherato, tra la delusione della ragazza e la costernazione della famiglia di lei. Ma l'impresa di acciuffarlo sara tutt’altro che agevole…

Il canto e la voce soave di una ragazza seducono il vagabondo inducendolo ad entrare nella missione e partecipare egli stesso alla funzione in corso, al termine della quale la conversazione tenuta con la ragazza e il pastore, convertono il vagabondo alla rettitudine ed accomiatandosi, spontaneamente restituisce la cassetta delle offerte in precedenza arraffata. Il quartiere e degradato, i suoi abitanti poveri, violenti e nullafacenti, o meglio, occupati a malmenare i malcapitati agenti della locale stazione di polizia, e tra tutti spicca per cattiveria il trucido, gigantesco e prepotente bullo che terrorizza tutta la via antistante la missione. Il lavoro scarseggia, tranne quello di poliziotto, reclamizzato e offerto fuori dalla locale stazione di polizia e che alla fine tenterà anche il vagabondo. Dopo due o tre tentativi falliti, forzando la propria anarchica natura, si decide ad entrare nella stazione per uscirne poco dopo calzando una fiammante uniforme da poliziotto di due taglie più grande, ma abilitato a difendere e far osservare la legge ed inviato in missione proprio nella via dove spadroneggia il cattivo. Si pentirà, Charlot, della carriera intrapresa non appena si troverà faccia a faccia col prepotente, insofferente all'autorità e che subito gli manifesta le sue pessime intenzioni immobilizzandolo contro un lampione a gas che con forza erculea sta piegando intorno al collo di Charlot che però fulmineamente sfugge la presa infilandogli a sua volta la testa dentro il lampione e aprendo la valvola del gas facendogli perdere i sensi. Fatti intervenire gli increduli colleghi per immobilizzare e trasportare in galera il mascalzone, Charlot si imbatte nella ragazza della missione, volontaria nell'accudire le famiglie disagiate della via, accompagnandola e coadiuvandola nelle visite. Nel frattempo il cattivo si riprende e sbaragliata l'intera squadra di poliziotti fa ritorno alla propria abitazione dove intraprende un furibondo litigio con la disgraziata sua consorte richiamando l'attenzione di Charlot che accorre in soccorso, ignorando le generalità del protagonista, scoprendolo solo quando questi gli si avventerà contro per vendicarsi dell'affronto subito. La ragazza rimasta nel frattempo sola e adocchiata da una banda di balordi che, rapitala, la segrega in un sotterraneo in compagnia di un drogato che non mancherà di manifestarle indesiderate attenzioni. Sfuggendo le grinfie del rivale, Charlot, finisce per imbattersi nella stessa banda di balordi soccombendo alla superiorità del numero, e sbattuto nello stesso luogo di segregazione della ragazza finisce per sedersi proprio sulla siringa che il drogato stava approntandosi con una dose di stupefacente; immediato l'effetto dell'iniezione che infonde a Charlot una carica di vitalità incontenibile grazie alla quale sbaraglia tutti coloro che incontra sulla sua strada liberando se stesso, la ragazza ed il quartiere dalle prepotenze e angherie…
